Vertigo is known as a state where one experiences dizziness. It can be characterized by a feeling of unstoppable merry go round or even a feeling of movement in space. The causes of vertigo are usually related to an infection of the inner ear and respiratory problems. Although vertigo is a form of dizziness, not all kinds of dizziness are vertigo.
So what makes vertigo any different from normal dizziness? Well, vertigo is more severe and is a health condition that can lead to more serious problems. It is often characterized by a form of hallucination of movements. One may feel nausea, imbalanced and a feeling of falling in space. If affected with vertigo, one feels as if the surroundings are moving and swirling. The symptoms of vertigo may last from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the severity.
Some people suffer from what is known as benign positional vertigo, which can lead to hear loss if left untreated. Benign positional vertigo is one of the most common causes of vertigo. As this is a condition of the inner ear, it seems that a blow to the head or an upper respiratory infection could be responsible for it. When this happens, the inner ear's structures are affected and this causes vertigo especially when there is movement of the head like turning in bed. The form of vertigo attack usually lasts about 30-60 seconds.
Other causes of vertigo can be from migraine, multiple sclerosis and injuries to the neck. Another cause is the inflammation of the upper respiratory system that leads to a disorder of the inner ear.
While there is no standard treatment for vertigo, it can be be minimized and controlled by Vestibular rehabilitation therapy. The therapy helps to restore the normal activity of the vestibular system and therefore assist in diminishing dizziness and the feeling of imbalance. Other treatments could be simply stopping medications that cause vertigo.
